The World Health Organization has warned Vietnam of the risks of using “substandard African swine fever vaccines.

As Vietnam prepares to export African swine fever vaccines, the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) has warned that more testing of African swine fever vaccines is needed. The OIE said the vaccine’s manufacturer, Vietnam’s AVAC, had not shared enough data with international researchers and institutions. The WHO also wrote: “The use of non-compliant and poor-quality vaccines may not provide any protection against African swine fever and carries the risk of transmitting the vaccine virus, which can cause acute or chronic illness.” Harmless treatment is particularly important.
