The intense heatwave in Japan has severely impacted the livestock industry

Since July, Niigata Prefecture in Japan has been experiencing record-breaking heatwaves, causing a significant impact on the local livestock sector. As of July 23rd, approximately 5,500 laying hens have died due to the high temperatures, and the size of the eggs has noticeably decreased. Additionally, dairy cows have experienced a decline in appetite due to the heat, and the milk production of all dairy cows in the county has dropped by 15% compared to the same period last year. Pigs have also shown “summer fatigue” due to the heat, with decreased appetite and slow growth. Some pigs have been experiencing slow weight gain, which may result in delayed shipments by 1 to 2 weeks.
