Affected by the cold wave brought by the “polar vortex”, the live cattle futures price at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange in the United States has risen significantly.
Among them, the January fattening cattle futures jumped by 8.800 cents, closing at 329.875 cents per pound, with an increase of nearly 3%, reaching a new high in the past three months.
This price increase was also due to the fact that the size of the US cattle herd has dropped to the lowest level since 1951, with only 867 million cattle. The cold wave further intensified the expectation of supply shortage.
However, the spot market performed differently. The wholesale prices of Choice-grade and Select-grade boxed beef fell on the same day.
